Carroll Irishâs sheep are pictured at their summer range in the rugged Yolla Bolly Mountains in Mendocino National Forest near Solomon Peak in western Tehama County around 1921. In Wintun, yola means âsnow,â and boli means âspirit.â The belief that peaks were the abode of spirits was common among the California Indians. (Wilson family collection.)
In this image, sheep cross a creek. (Note the wagon used as part of the bridge.) Hobart Moulton recalled that sheep did not like crossing bridges. Sometimes, a sheepherder would have to drag or lead a ewe across before the others would follow. Burros wearing bells were used at times to lead sheep when they were trailed to and from mountain meadows. (Opal Thornton Mendenhall collection.)
